D&M Does Buy SonicBlue

from the ReplayTV-lives... dept

The on again, off again deal by SonicBlue to sell most of their assets to D&M holdings (Denon and Marantz) is apparently back on again - thanks to their bankruptcy auction. D&M came in and ended up with the company anyway, for $36.2 million. The original deal was supposed to be for "around $40 million" anyway, so I wonder what was the dealbreaker that made them call it off initially. It still remains to be seen what D&M does with ReplayTV and the RIO mp3 player line.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It was highly anticipated that D&M would call of the deal and wait till the auction to purchase the company anyways. It was widely speculated they could possible get the company for cheaper at an auction, and apparently that strategy panned out. This is why they originally pulled out. It turned out to be a good decision, since it apparently saved them a few million.
