Internet Radio Tuning In
from the again,-not-a-surprise dept
Lots of news today that really shouldn't be surprising, but which large companies haven't been able to grasp. The latest is the fact that many people are turning to internet radio in order to access niche forms of music that they certainly can't find on real radio - which has turned into one large station owned by Clear Channel, playing the same 25 songs on repeat. It seems that the large radio companies haven't quite figured out that there are people out there who like to listen to something different than the pre-programmed "manufactured pop" acts that come out each year. Of course, from their standpoint, the problem with niche audiences are exactly that: they're niche. But, pool them all together, and it's quite a large group of people - and, even better, they tend to be more fanatical about the music they listen to.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
