Phone Threat To Air Safety

from the really-there? dept

Earlier this week we had an article that got some attention about whether or not there really was any "risks" involved in using mobile phones on a plane. As if expecting such questions to be raised, the Civil Aviation Authority over in the UK has come out with a report talking about the dangers of using mobile phones on airplanes. They claim that in the past seven years there have been 35 mobile-phone related safety "incidents". The specific indcidents include: "false warnings in the cockpit, distractions causing aircraft to stray accidentally onto runways or fly at the wrong altitude, interrupted radio communications and multiple safety systems malfunctions."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    heh

2 of the cited incidents were just because people were such JERKS that they just would not shut off their damn phones.

These are the types that need to be banned from movie theatres. Inconsiderate clods, indeed.

    Not very convincing

Seems like the study is just an anecdotal survey of pilots. It doesn't prove causation. Seems like any glitch in avionics COULD be blamed on somebody using a mobile phone, but could be a bug in the electronics or software that run the cockpit.
