The E-Biz Surprise - The Predictions Were Underhyped
from the everything-is-coming-true dept
This really isn't a surprise for some people, but it turns out that many of those "starry-eyed" predictions of how the internet was going to change the business world during the boom years have actually come true. In some cases, it appears the hyped predictions were too low. So, while the stock market has been having its problems, the underlying value of the internet has still been moving forward full steam. Sure, plenty of money got thrown away in the capital markets - but that doesn't mean that the internet, itself, was a dud. Meanwhile, the believers say we're still only just beginning to see what the internet can do for business. Certainly, companies are experiencing some cultural growing pains as they learn to deal with new technologies, but it appears that companies that are really embracing what the technology allows them to do are seeing the benefits.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
