AT&T Wireless In Push For New Users
AT&T Wireless is getting into the prepaid wireless business, as they look to expand their customer base. Of course, the article says that this is really a cross between a prepaid system and a contract system. The only difference I can see is that AT&T Wireless will automatically sign you up for the next month when the latest month expires - or when you run out of minutes. So, this is really more of a month-to-month plan - where they expect people with poor credit to pay up front. Of course, this makes you wonder about the value of going after customers who are a credit risk. For a while the focus in the industry had been to sign up as many users as possible, but there had been a recent shift to looking for higher paying customers instead. Is this another shift, or is AT&T Wireless just looking to pick up some business at both ends?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
