Bemoaning The Death Of CDPD
In case you hadn't noticed it (and there's a good chance you hadn't), it appears that CDPD is nearing the end of its lifetime as a wireless data network technology. Popular with some early wireless data systems, it's (of course) quickly being surpassed by the various flavors of 2.5G and 3G technologies (and, yes, even WiFi, in some cases). So, as CDPD networks are being phased out, the three people in the world who still use them (I'm joking, I'm joking, don't correct me on that...) are scuffling to figure out what they should switch to. Unfortunately, despite all the hype about 2.5G and other new network technologies, they don't come anywhere near CDPD in terms of coverage. Of course, at the speeds CDPD sends data, you might as well hang onto until you reach an area that gives you a faster network and sending then.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
