Can A Wicked Website Stop Youth Crime?

from the nice-try dept

The UK government has apparently spent quite a lot of money on creating a cartoony website telling kids what a life of crime is about. At what point do the people who make up these sorts of things realize that most kids see through any attempt at this type of information? Kids - especially those likely to cause trouble - have enough street smarts to know when something is fake and when they're being lectured to. I'd imagine this website is mostly going to be ignored - but in the few cases where kids look at it, it's mostly going to be to make fun of it. Instead of talking down to the kids with "fake" stories, why not create a real forum where troubled kids can interact in more positive ways? The internet isn't a one-way medium, but it always appears that way to those who think they need to teach lessons to others.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

"A car is like a dangerous weapon ... You could quite easily have an accident"

I didn't view all of the rizer site, but the above car theft warning is typical. I wonder how long it will take the US government to copy the idea and spend much more money trying to make it work.
