The Joy Of Lyrics - The Crackdown Of The Music Industry

from the frubmlub dept

Oh, that music industry. For years they've been upset by anyone who dares post lyrics online. I guess they're afraid of someone (gasp!) singing along correctly without paying them royalties. We posted a story about a site that tried to work with the music industry to post lyrics online almost three years ago. According to this BBC article, that website is still around, but they're finally going to shut down because it's just too much trouble dealing with an angry music industry - with no central way to license lyrics. Of course, as the article points out, many of the lyrics online are written by fans transcribing what they hear, and as such, it often has mistakes in it. So, my question is, if the transcribed lyrics have mistakes, are they still under the copyright control of the music industry? If not, why not set up a site that purposely (and perhaps obviously) has certain mistakes in the lyrics?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

"Excuse me while I kiss this guy"

There already are many such websites. Use www.google.com to search for "mondegreen" or "while I kiss this guy" to find them (one such site is www.kissthisguy.com)

    Stick it on KazaA

If you want to really %$&# off the recording industry, then bung all the lyrics on P2P networks along with the ripped-off MP3's!

The RIAA/MPAA et al are getting far too powerful for commercial organisations, they think they're the government for the world now (kinda like Bush!)
