Fake Bank Web Site Scam Reaches US

from the it's-everywhere dept

Not only is the internet a global medium, but it's allowing scams to be a global system as well. For the last month or so, I keep seeing articles about scams involving specific banks. The scam is pretty straightforward. A spoofed email comes from a bank, telling people they need to log in and update their info. The page they are sent to looks just like the bank's actual page, but really isn't. The people fill out their info, and suddenly the scammers have everything they need. While the scam has hit several Australian banks, it's now reached the US, as Bank of America is warning its customers to watch out for the scam. The article sounds one positive note about the scam - which is that not many people were fooled by it. Hopefully, people are becoming naturally more skeptical on these sorts of things.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Scams

I had a similar experience with a scam that looked completely legit from "eBay" same fonts, colors, etc.

it went through and asked for all of my personal info and checking account info, etc. I just wonder how many people were scammed with that one??
