Download Services Should Turn To Golden Oldies

from the well,-look-at-that dept

Despite the conventional music industry wisdom that everyone using file sharing services are evil pirating teenagers, a new study (done by the music industry themselves) has found that there are just as many people over the age of 45 downloading music as there are teenagers. The people who put together the study were surprised. The simple fact, is that the music industry decided long ago that their target market was teens, and those over 40 clearly had no more interest in music - so they've been ignoring them. Now, downloading has given the music industry insight into a mostly untapped market that they'll try to exploit (of course). Isn't it funny that all that "illegal activity" has actually opened up a brand new market for the industry? Of course, they won't look at it that way...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

      Re: download golden oldies

Us old geezers have already purchased the album on vinyl, 8-track, cassette and CD which have been lost or damage over the years.

Duh to the music industry. The only songs I've down loaded are 'golden oldies' that the music industry hasn't seen fit to release on CD. Somewhere someone was kind enough to convert their old format (8-track/vinyl/cassette) media to digital and make it available for me to hear.
