Pinpoint Weather - Localize Your Forecast

from the microclimates dept

I live in an area of microclimates, where the weather can be completely different around the corner. So, I know that general area weather forecasts can often be useless. It appears that many other people have realized this as well, and there are a bunch of services now offering localized, personalized weather forecasts, that go into much greater detail than the old National Weather Service details. As the technology gets better and cheaper, people in the industry say it's only going to get better - to the point where your mobile phone may beep at you if you're heading into inclement weather.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Try the arctic circle

Clouds can go around the world in a few hours up there, so temperatures in the summer can go from sunny, calm 70F to 80 mph blizzards at 30F within 15 minutes. Tides also make beaches grow and shrink by miles. Weather forecasts are rather useless. The air is very clear, so you can literally see storm systems coming at you like a fast-motion movie.

    No Subject Given

All of our local TV stations offer a personalized weather forecast and alerts via e-mail. I have then send any T-storm or Tornado Warnings to my cell-phone (just send the email to phone#@verizon.com) and I have a cheap weather radio that's always in my pocket
