Test Driving Technology: Why People Beta Test

from the isn't-it-obvious? dept

If you live in the technology world, I guess you can forget that people outside of it don't always know what things like "beta test" mean. So, it's a bit amusing to come across this article in a North Carolina newspaper that explains the basic concept of beta testing and why companies agree to give out their products early and beta testers agree to give up their "labor" to test out these products. The article descrbes it as a "win-win" situation. Companies get widespread tests that run their products through all sorts of situations, while testers get their hands on the latest and greatest products earlier than their friends. Companies are also discovering that beta testing acts as a form of advertising. People tell (or show) their friends about whatever product they're testing - and often end up buying the release version of the product themselves.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
