At Last, Email From Baghdad

from the important-stuff-first dept

With all that's going on in Iraq, some people have decided to set up the first internet cafe in Baghdad for those who want to connect to the outside world. They're using a satellite modem and a somewhat unreliable electricity generator to keep the place running. The prices seem quite high ($5/hour for surfing - which isn't that bad - but, $1.25 to send an email and $0.75 to receive an email, so Baghdad emailers better hope they don't get too popular). The guys running the cafe say that they're losing money, since it's so expensive to keep the connection, but they're doing this to help people connect - not just to make money. They're also letting people surf any site they want, and aren't concerned about the need to block anything.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
