Euro Notes May Be Radio Tagged

from the unintended-consequences dept

While the US is working on redesigning our currency yet again to stop counterfeiting (this time we get color!), folks over in Europe are exploring the idea of sticking RFID tags onto their money in order to prevent counterfeiting, while also making it easier for banks to count money quickly. On the counterfeiting side, this might sound like a good idea, but it does raise some of the same privacy issues that RFID tags in clothing would raise. Imagine the street criminal who gets his hands on an RFID reader, and can take a reading of everyone walking down the street to determine how much cash they're carrying in their wallet. Not that there aren't plenty of good reasons to look into this, but I'm wondering how carefully it's been thought through.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    maybe it's time for...

purses with wires all over acting as Faraday cages to disrupt RFID readers?
