Telcos Counter Net Phoning With TV plans
from the gotta-have-the-triple-play dept
People keep talking about the "triple play" of data into and out of the house being: TV, telephone, and internet. The cable companies have the clear lead in such bundles, as they had the TV aspect locked up, are leading the internet race, and are now starting to introduce voice-over-broadband for the phone. The telephone companies are now fighting back. While they're losing ground in their strong point - telephones - they've been pushing forward with their DSL plans aggressively, trying to take back ground from the cable companies. Now, they're starting to announce plans to get into the TV business as well. Of course, it's not clear exactly how they'll go about doing this, as it would take an upgrade of both technology and management mindset. Previous attempts for telephone companies to control cable companies haven't gone all that well. The focus of this article is SBC, who says they need a television offering, though, they chose to drop out of the bidding for DirecTV. Of course, if they really decide to go ahead with video over their own networks, then they have quite a ways to go. At least the cable companies have been playing with this technology for quite some time. By the time the telephone carriers figure this out, the cable companies should have quite the lead.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
