AT&T Wireless To Target Cingular?

These rumors simply won't die. For years now, everyone has been assuming that consolidation in the US wireless carrier market was already a done deal - and yet, nothing has happened. Now, the analysts are again coming up with all their reasons why consolidation is likely to happen soon, and the two companies they say to watch are AT&T Wireless and Cingular. The article focuses on the major TDMA/GSM carriers (AT&T Wireless, Cingular, and T-Mobile) and looks at the various reasons why they might merge. I don't deny the fact that this might happen, but the rumors have been around for so long that I wonder if the analysts actually know anything or just need to predict something for the sake of predicting it. You know, whenever the deals actually do happen, that some analyst will take credit for accurately predicting it - when, in reality, people have been predicting it for years.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
