Possibilities Limitless For Thinking Robots

from the watch-them-grow-up dept

Seems to be an increasingly popular topic, but here's a story about some more researchers working on artificially intelligent robots that are supposed to learn as they "grow up". For example, the robots are being taught how to walk down halls and turn the corner without bumping into walls. It takes a few tries, but once they learn, they move onto more complicated tasks. Of course, in all the similar stories I've heard on this topic, these robots never actually seem to get very far beyond such basic tasks. It seems like, at this point, the learning curve is pretty slow.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Pet toys?

Are we reasonably close to making a robot that can hide under a couch or fight back against the family cat? That'll do wonders for obese pets.

    No Subject Given

What a load of nonsense. This is a typical "in n years time" prediction that the AI community has been making for the latest 40 years.
