Napster Relaunch May Be Far Off

from the does-anyone-really-care? dept

With all the rumors about Apple buying the Napster name, someone asked a very valid question as to whether or not the Napster name still means anything? Is it really going to attract users any more? After all, it's been completely dead for quite some time. If the value of the name decreases over time, then it's only going to keep on dropping as Roxio is saying it may be many months before they get around to relaunching Napster. I'm sure the name still has some value, at least in attracting attention. However, I don't think it's a value that goes very far. If the service is terrible, it won't matter what it's called.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

    thats a very good point.

also, most people have moved to another P2P program.

    Re: No Subject Given

Yeah, KaZaa seems to be the most popular right now. Maybe Napster still resonants with the over-40 crowd who only learn about this stuff when NBC gets around to putting it on TV...
