Web Services Boon For Customers, Not Investors Or Systems Integrators

from the is-that-so? dept

A new report is saying that while web services will be great for companies using them, it's going to cause systems integrators to have to scramble for a new line of work. First, I'm not sure that's completely true, and even if it is, I'm not sure it's such a bad thing. For it to actually happen that way, you have to assume that web services work perfectly well and are easily understandable to anyone using them. I doubt that's going to be the case. Furthermore, even if the connections themselves are now made easier there are still plenty of questions that will pop up in implementing web services in larger organizations, and I'm sure the systems integrators will be able to take some of their expertise and shift it into a web services world. As for the claim that there's no clear way for investors to "profit" off of web services, I would think that investors would want to look at companies that are embracing web services. When done properly, it's leading to some pretty impressive efficiencies, which are likely to improve the bottom line.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
