Could You Live Without The Internet?

from the change-of-lifestyle dept

A completely pointless study in the UK asked people if their quality of life would go up or down if the internet disappeared. About 60% said quality of life would decrease, while just under 20% said it would increase. This information helps us how? Studies asking completely hypothetical questions don't really give us useful information. Furthermore, this study was run by an anti-spam company, though, I have no idea how this info would be useful to them. Were they thinking of shutting down the internet to get rid of spam, and will now decide not to?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Internet-Free Zones

Historical patterns indicate that public opinion of a given technology shifts from "liberating" in the early stages to "oppression" in the end. Liberals have chronic complaints against our culture of cars, televisions, and plastic. Isn't it just a matter of time before college leftists begin smashing wi-fi transceivers to "oppose tyranny"?

      Re: Internet-Free Zones

It's easy to blame the liberals for everything. This has been a common tactic used by talk radio hosts and other mindless republicans that have nothing better to do.

The fact remains that this study is useless. In fact useless studies have become an international past time as well. I think it all started with the study by the US government to see how the sex life of a butterfly worked in the early 80's. Mind you, they spent ten million dollars to find out information they already knew.

It was all down hill from there. It seems to have gotten worse since the advent of the internet though.
