Sonny Bono's Widow Wants Top RIAA Job
from the just-what-we-need dept
First we got the "Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act" which gave entertainment companies virtually perpetual copyrights for their content, and now, his widow is saying she would love to hold the top job at the RIAA, now that Hilary Rosen is leaving. Of course, the two sides haven't spoken at all, but it wouldn't be much of a surprise if the RIAA took one step backwards and signed up someone who isn't interested in looking at how digital music can help the industry. The RIAA has a history of trying to prop-up obsolete laws and business models, so expect the next RIAA-leader to come from that camp. Update: The Associated Press has picked up on this story and points out that Rep. Bono has recently formed a Congressional caucus on copyright issues, and this might present a conflict of interests - as decisions made by the caucus might actually represent her positioning herself for her "future career".Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
