Publish And Be Free
from the one-step-closer dept
One topic that has come up for debate around here a few times, is the issue of whether published academic research should be free online. Currently, most such research ends up in very expensive journals, whose business model is to sell copies to university libraries. However, people point out that providing that information for free online would help jumpstart additional research building upon what others have learned. Some even point out that research should clearly be freely available when any part of it is funded with public money (as quite a bit of academic research is). Over in the UK, they've moved a step closer to this goal of freely publishing research online. To keep the publishers going, there will still be a "submission fee" for the writer to cover the costs of editing and peer reviewing the research. However, the end results will be available to everyone for free online.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
