Meshing WiFi

It seems that as WiFi continues to get more and more attention, lots of people are suddenly interested in ways to make WiFi a "mesh" solution - to let data hop across multiple WiFi access points until it reaches the backhaul point. The latest to jump on this bandwagon is a company called Strix, who is hyping up the fact that you can expand their wireless access points without using cables. It took me until about halfway through their announcement to realize that they were just offering yet-another mesh solution for WiFi. At first the make it sound like they're offering more of a wide-area fixed-wireless solution - but that's clearly not the case. There are still some questions about how well mesh networks perform in the real world, and whether or not high usage causes problems as the data needs to bounce from access point to access point searching for a way out.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
