A Sense Of Touch... Online

from the just-what-we-need dept

Another technology that people always talk about, but which never really seems to get anywhere is "haptics" - the idea of sending a sense of "touch" through the internet. Now some more researchers are demonstrating their latest haptics work, suggesting that it can be useful for training doctors. They also suggest that it could take off in the gaming industry, but leave out everyone's favorite topic when the discussion turns to haptics: porn. Either way, don't hold your breath for this technology. Every time another researcher demonstrates their product it seems to disappear pretty quickly after that. It doesn't sound like we'll be seeing any commercial products any time soon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Rapist Paradise

I can just see it now -- fake "doctors" that reach their robotic hands around a 13-year-old boy's balls and tells them to cough. Or grabbing some woman's boobs and telling her she has terrible cancer.
