Smart Cars With Smart Roads Can Help Out Dumb Drivers
from the and-those-dumb-drivers-need-help dept
We were just discussing Honda's new "collision mitigation braking system" to help gently assist drivers in avoiding accidents. However, just having the smarts in the car might not be enough. Researchers are working on "smart roads" filled with sensors that can communicate with "smart cars" to help prevent accidents. The researchers admit that there's not much new in the systems, but they're doing much more analysis of how humans react to these sorts of things - and how to create systems that will create the right response from drivers. They're hoping to have them on the roads within five years (meaning, expect them in ten to twenty years). Now, we just need the system that tells the guy going ten miles below the speed limit in the lefthand lane that it's time to move over and let the normal drivers pass.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
