Being Invisible

from the people-are-disappearing-everywhere dept

An increasingly popular topic, it seems, is researchers working on invisibility. We had a story back in February about a Japanese researcher who could make people invisible, though it was only good for photographs, since it involved projecting an image onto the invisible person, and having it match with the background. A few days later we had a discussion on terahertz radiation photography - a method of seeing through certain objects. Another, similar technique was discussed in April. This time, a researcher was talking about using tiny reflective lenses to camouflage items (though, there were plenty of questions about how well this would actually work). So, now, Wired Magazine has put together a report about a such invisibility technologies and what it might take to build a real invisibility solution. Basically, they say that it's not impossible, but it's really not doable with today's technology.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

That is so not true. The Romulans had it first and the technology was stolen from them.
