Canada’s Microcell to Offer Hiptop

Danger is very slowly signing up new carriers to offer their Hiptop device. The latest is Canadian carrier Microcell. For the most part, it appears that Danger is having a lot of trouble finding multiple carriers in the same market who are willing to sign up and offer the device, and its corresponding service. No word yet on whether Microcell will be as ridiculously controlling as T-Mobile is when it comes to what you can do with the device. Danger (and T-Mobile) are missing out on a huge opportunity by locking down the device. As other innovative solutions come to market with open platforms, the Danger device is going to become quickly obsolete it isn't opened up.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Microcell Won't Be Another T-Mobile

Not to worry about Microcell/Fido pushing Danger around. They probably have about the same market cap! ;) Microcell has just come out of restructuring in Canada, and has a lot of problems retaining subscribers. In the Canadian market, they are the fourth horse in a three-horse race.
