Banning Mobile Phones At Summer Camp

from the oh,-the-horror dept

Now that summer camp sessions are in full swing, many have discovered that, increasingly, campers are showing up carrying a mobile phone. In response, a large number of summer camps now ban mobile phones. Some kids still sneak them in, but the phones are quickly confiscated if the kids are caught with them. Some parents are upset, since they say they want to use the mobile phone to stay connected with their parents, but camp officials point out that part of the reason for sending kids to summer camp is to help them learn how to be independent from their parents.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Cellphones? When *I* went to camp, I had to send smoke signals if I wanted to communicate. Cokes were contraband. Girls were nowhere to be found. To get to my cabin it was uphill - both ways! And I loved it!

    Parents, cut the aprin strings....

    evolution of mobile phones

In the future cell phones will be implanted in everyone's brain at birth, with no on/off switch. The spammers will love it -- no more pesky filters.
