Guilty Plea In Kinko's Keystroke Caper

from the identity-theft-everywhere dept

A scammer who installed hidden keystroke logging software throughout a variety of Kinko's in Manhattan has now filed a guilty plea to the charges. He ran those programs for nearly two years, capturing all sorts of account information from various people using Kinko's computers, and then sold that information online. He also did some identity theft work himself, opening up fraudulent accounts, and transferring money from his victim's accounts to his own. The only reason he was caught was that he decided to use a remote PC controlling program to search out one user's home PC... while the guy was sitting at the PC. So, it didn't take long for them to track him down. Here's the scary part, though. While he was out on bail, he was caught installing more spy software at another Kinko's. You have to wonder about someone who gets caught committing the same exact crime he's awaiting trial for.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
