Baghdad Calling! Mobile Phones Spring to Life
After all the political battles over who was going to supply mobile phone coverage to Iraq, some were surprised today to suddenly discover that their mobile phones were working. Officially, no licenses have been granted, but apparently the service is already running. The article is a little confusing, and doesn't seem to keep all the details straight. From the article, it sounds as though the system is actually from MTC-Vodafone, as some users received a text message from the company (I think - this part is a bit confusing in the article). However, a spokesperson from MTC-Vodafone (reached in Baghdad via his mobile phone...) said that he had no idea that they were offering service. Update: I'm reminded that we actually talked about this last month, explaining how MTC-Vodafone got approval to build their network. Update 2: Meanwhile, Batelco claims that they are the first to offer GSM service in Baghdad.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
