Beating E-Scammers At Their Own Game

from the scam-baiting dept

It's the new online sport of the summer. There have been way too many articles written by reporters who have writer's block and notice a 419/Nigerian email scam spam in their mailbox, and decide to write back. We've covered that story too often. However, doing so for your own fun and entertainment is apparently the online sport of the summer. There are sites that give you tips on better ways to bait the scammers, and how to have more fun with it. The reporter who writes about it says it makes dealing with spam so much more fun, because now he looks forward to getting such scam emails. I would suggest, if you're having trouble coming up with your own original responses, that you just use this handy automated Nigerian scam responder.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Damn

Damn, I notice they also have an automated Nigeria scam email generator (in addition to their reply generator). I was planning on doing that! I have been saving the 419 emails I receive (an average of one a day), and I was going to put them through an automated statistical analysis to generate similar sounding letters. Oh well, someone beat me to it.
