Indian Government Tries To Censor The Internet

from the next-on-the-list dept

Folks in India are pointing out that the latest laws from the Indian government telling ISPs they're responsible for blocking "offending" websites are simply impossible to enforce. They quote a great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi wondering if the website he runs about his great-grandfather will need to be "blocked" because of Gandhi's "anti-government views". As he points out: "People who shape and provide the Internet must be laughing themselves crazy," since this is an impossible law to enforce. He also wonders who could possibly be the right "competent authority" to decide what should and should not be blocked. Of course, those in nearby countries like China and Iran seem to have done a fairly passable job of blocking sites they don't like.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

    And millions of others!
Iran specifically has wasted countless man hours inventing new kinds of blocking software that is rendered useless with a seatelite internet connection. It's almost as funny as the video games ban in greece.

The US censors anti-government sites also

If someone put up a web site about killing the President, blowing up congress, etc., the site will get taken down.

India is home to many anti-government extremists.
