The Future Of Technology?

from the is-it-here? dept

Business Week is running a huge issue all about the future of technology where they talk to many different people, who all pretty much disagree. Still, while none of it will come true exactly, there are some good nuggets to get you thinking about possibilities. There are simply too many articles to discuss them all, but the first one, about why tech will bloom again is a pretty good starting point. The series also takes on the ongoing debate (covered here before) between Nick Carr who contends that technology doesn't matter and everyone else in the technology industry (in this case, represented wonderfully by Andy Grove) explaining that we can't even imagine the potential of technologies that are coming along. They also spend some time trying to suggest what the next big thing might be. Good weekend reading.

    a passing fad

Everybody knows that computers are a passing fad. In a few years we'll be back to writing with quill pens.

    Re: a passing fad

A few years? Already I use my quill pen to write all of Techdirt, and then send it off to a bunch of trained monkeys to post it to this "internet" thing.

I might consider a digital quill pen, but anything else just isn't writing.

The Quest for the Next Big Thing

In this particular article of BusinessWeek, Robert D. Hof thinks that the Next Big Thing is the emergency of smart mobs, not gadgets, gizmos, software or hardware.

You can read my short summary on the Smart Mobs blog or a longer one with my selected choices about the special BusinessWeek issue on my own blog.

    utility computing

One of the best articles was about utility computing. The rest of the future section was too much of scrying, in my opinion.
