US Invasion Of Geeky Japanese Toilets

from the a-perfect-storm dept

I've heard plenty of stories of the magnificent high tech toilets in Japan and how they have a habit of "confusing" Western visitors. Well, now they'll be able to confuse people here too, as one of the largest high tech toilet makers in Japan, Toto, is getting ready to bring them to the US. The article includes plenty of typical amusing stories about confused travelers trying to figure out what the random buttons do, and occasionally being a bit surprised. About all you need to know about that is this lovely quote: "So there I am, sitting on this sleek-looking loo, idly punching the buttons on this little panel next to the toilet, and all of a sudden my bum is right smack in the middle of the perfect storm. Things are spraying, sloshing, squirting and swooshing. The theme from Jaws suddenly starts playing in my head..." I'm sure non-traveling Americans can't wait for their own such experiences.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Spew and Stew

I can just see the lawsuits coming -- scared/annoyed customer leaves toilet unflushed, then the stew sprays all over the next customer.

      It's like the Simsons Episode...

I have had personal experiences in Japan, but I like even better the Simpson's episode where Homer watches the toilet and in awe exclaims "They're yeeeeeears ahead of us!" Later Lisa comes out of the bathroom stating the the toilet recommended some near-by places to eat.
