Internet Job Boards Losing Their Usefulness?
from the too-many-users dept
Back in the 90s, if you were looking for a job, it certainly helped to go online to look over job listings on websites and to use some of the brand name job boards. However, as more and more people got online, the benefits of using online job boards have dwindled. The problem, for most companies, appears to be that they're inundated with resumes. The popularity of searching for a job online has made it so people find out about more jobs - but it doesn't necessarily mean that it does a better job of setting up people with relevant jobs. I also wonder how much the simplicity with which people found jobs in the late 90s has played into this. Learning how to properly apply for a job in the late 90s wasn't a skill that anyone needed. Companies were so desperate, they were just looking to hire anyone who bothered to contact them. So, these days, when it actually takes some skills to apply for a job, people are still sending in terrible cover letter emails and badly done resumes.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Resume Writing

Standards never were lower
There were simply more scumbag recruiters, e.g. the housewife from Kansas who knows nothing about computers, who would snatch your resume off the net and fax it to companies all over the country. They just wanted the money.

sorry if
But we need to teach people to CREATE jobs.
Export products instead of import.
Also people need to learn to buy from socially responsible companies.
If all this were done then we wouldn't be in this mess.
