Unveiling Airgo - Extending And Speeding Up WiFi
It looks like the folks at Airgo hired quite a PR team. In what's clearly a coordinated effort, there are articles about Airgo's unveiling appearing everywhere. The company, made up of some big names in WiFi and with large amount (these days) of venture capital in the bank, the company is making quite a splash with articles appearing in News.com, The New York Times, and a Reuters piece that is being picked up by everyone who doesn't want to write their own version. The short story is that they're releasing some WiFi chips that include some proprietary technology that supposedly will allow data on a WiFi network to travel approximately twice as fast and over a wider range. With the sort of publicity, pedigree, and backing, it should be interesting to see what they do - and whether or not they can overcome having non-standard technology. For them to be able to do what they want to do, they're going to need to make a lot of partnerships fast - which I guess explains the big press push. Of course, as with many such things, they're banking on the idea that their technology will become the next standard.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
