Microsoft Is The Latest IM To Block Trillian
from the we-need-interoperability... dept
Every time I post a story here about IM interoperability (or the lack of it), someone yells at me for not knowing about Trillian. I know about Trillian. I also remember how AOL spent plenty of time trying to block Trillian from working with AIM, until they finally came to some sort of truce. So, Trillian is not the solution. For example, MSN is getting ready to upgrade their IM product and have warned Trillian users that the product will no longer work with MS Messenger. So, while it's likely that some sort of deal will be worked out by the time the product actually launches, folks using products like Trillian are constantly at the mercy of AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft. If there were an IM interoperability standard that everyone agreed to, then this wouldn't matter.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Say La Vie MSN ...
I refuse to be bullied into using multiple chat clients ... the vast majority of my contacts do not use MSN Messenger because it is far too intrusive anyhow ...
This is the equivilent of theoretically having to have multiple telephones because the telcom industry doesn't want to work together.
MSN Messenger blows ...

Choose not to use MSN or any of the other " big 3 " that plays unfair and eventually a standard will have to occur.
I'm sticking with Trillian.

New Improved MSN Messenger
They noticed that the EULA for the new version of MSN Messenger has some interesting clauses:
What's that saying about the first one being free?[ link to this | view in thread ]
I'm upset by this
Microsoft has dropped all support for Sidewinder game products, which has been no problem up until now, but it pisses me off that they're drawing the line between v4.6 and v4.7, as that leaves us in a lurch.

If you've got any sense you'll use ICQ with it's encryption abilities and a reasonably "open" protocol.
Trillian is still the best IM client for Windows though.
