Hutchison Upbeat On 3G - Can Only Go Up From Here...
Hutchison, providers of the incredibly overhyped 3G launch in the UK that found sales well short of expectations is now claiming that they're upbeat about the prospects for 3G. Of course, they are. They've spent all this money, and it's unlikely things can get any worse. They now claim that 120,000 people in the UK have signed up - showing that they've gotten quite a boost since they dropped their prices considerably. Of course, the lower price strategy means less focus on advanced features and less money per user for Hutchison. Still, it will be interesting to see if they can salvage the offering after such a dismal start. Update by Derek: First half results from Hutch released today show a $500M loss in it's 3G operations in the UK, Italy, and Oz - bearing in mind that losses should be expected in the first years.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
