Shopkeepers Going Online To Avoid Muggers - Discovering Online Fraud Is Worse

from the won't-get-shot,-though dept

Over in the UK, many new retail establishments have decided to set themselves up online instead of in a retail location. One of the leading reasons is because they're afraid of being robbed if they run a store. Of course, I'm sure the wider market, the lack of rent and the inventory carrying costs of display merchandise probably plays into the decision. However, many of those shopkeepers starting up online to avoid getting mugged or ripped off by shoplifters are realizing that online fraud is a much bigger problem - and it's always the shops themselves that are left to pay the price of online fraud.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Question about liability

I'm kind of curious as to how the retails are bearing the brunt of this fraud. In most transactions I have completed online I had to provide a credit card to make payment. If the fraudulent purchaser is using a fake or stolen card, isn't it the credit card company that " eats " the loss ?
Any insite would be appreciated ...

      Re: Question about liability

We wrote about this earlier in the year. The credit card companies don't eat the loss: they pass it on to the merchant often in the form of fees.

Thank you ... I read the article and now have a better understanding of why more and more merchants are starting to decline to take charge cards

    No Subject Given

in a nation that has banned all firearms (and destroyed nearly all of them), this fear seems irrational. Sounds like reason #50 to start something online, not reason #1...

      Re: No Subject Given

This has to be one of the stupidest stories I have ever read. It's based on no evidence whatsoever. The bottom line is that there isn't that much shop crime in the UK and someone here is clearly trying to hype something.

      Ignore it
