Popular Spam Blacklist Shut Down After Continued Attacks

from the not-a-good-sign dept

One of the more popular anti-spam blacklists is the one from Osirusoft. However, the constant attacks from spammers doing denial of service attacks was apparently too much, and those who ran the list have shut it down. Of course, to make that point clear, they set the list to block all email - which seems a bit harsh. Customers of ISPs who use that blacklist are likely to be quite confused to discover that they're receiving no email. It's a good sign that spammers are so upset by blacklists that they're trying to take them down, but it's a bad sign that it's working. This will just encourage them to up their attacks on other anti-spam services.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

BRILLIANT !!! Now the cure is worse than the disease !!!

Everyone, get a clue, SPAM is just like junk mail you get via Snail mail. It isn't going to go away.

Makes me very happy than my company hasn't adopted using blacklists for their spam filter.

This is actually very very very funny. I have the stupidest grin on my face right now.

SPEWS had plenty of problems of thier own. They had a high false positive rate. I won't miss them.
