Ringtone Piracy Booming In Asia

Is it really any surprise that ringtone piracy is occurring? It's even less of a surprise that it's happening in Asia, where music piracy is rampant. Of course, chasing down each of the folks responsible is probably a costly activity. For once, it might make sense for everyone involved to realize that maybe they should just look at those ringtones as promotional items instead of profit centers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Yes, but...

Sure, but look at the costs of enforcement vs. the benefits of using it as promotion, and I think the cost-benefit equation looks better going with the promotional aspect.

The Miracle Solution is Called CRBT

This is the right opportunity to push even harder for Color Ring Back Tones. Doing so Carriers will have full control on Content, will get content providers confidence and will wipe out piracy and black market one for all. By the way living in Bangkok working in the wireless industry I know what Piracy & black market is. Cheers. LAurent
