Touchscreens In Taxis Experiment Failed

from the oh-well dept

It appears when people get into a taxicab they just want to get where they're going. I remember a few years back the infamous Yahoo taxi cabs that let you surf the internet (via a ricochet modem). Not much came of that experiment, and it appears that not much came of an experiment to provide special interactive touchscreens in the backs of NYC taxicabs either. The 515 screens are being pulled out of cabs after an eight month trial where it was determined that New Yorkers "didn't embrace" the feature. Most were "indifferent or annoyed" by the units, which certainly suggests that even the "didn't embrace" phrase was a bit of an understatement. However, this decision to kill the program - made by the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission - isn't making everyone happy. Some of the companies supplying the screens to taxi companies say that their own results have shown a much better response, and they'd like to keep the system running.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I was on the inside on this project.

It's actually a better idea than suggested, and the bonus is that is has a lot of potential as well. I'm disappointed that the Commission is being a bit bear-headed about the whole thing.

Is it too much to ask to be free of advertising for a few minutes a day? I don't want to watch ads and also pay for a ride at the same time. I'm glad they are taking the damn things out.
