Wireless Carriers Need to Step Up the Spam Battle

An excellent column pointing out that wireless carriers, so far, seem to have their head in the sand about spam. It's not SMS spam we're talking about here, but good old regular email spam. As more people start accessing their email from their mobile phones (or other mobile devices) the spam problem becomes evident very quickly. Right now, many anti-spam solutions are client-side solutions that run on a user's desktop - meaning that it doesn't do squat for someone checking their messages on their mobile device. There don't seem to be much in the way of spam filters (or, in some cases, any filters) in mobile email clients. To make matters worse, since users are often paying directly for bandwidth used, they're going to get fed up with spam very quickly. The carriers need to realize this and respond if they're going to keep people using their mobiles for email.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
