Hutchison Takes The Smart Out Of Smartphone

How many more mistakes is Hutchison going to make with their 3 service? It seems that they haven't done a single thing right from the very beginning. Their latest backwards (but oh-so-typical-carrier-mindset) move is to lock down the new Motorola/Symbian phone they're offering so that it can only run applications approved by Hutchison. In other words, they're completing ditching the immense value gained in having a supportive developer community by building a walled garden. Time and time again walled garden mentalities fail when compared to more open solutions. What they're doing is making sure that only those applications that Hutchison thinks is useful (i.e., that Hutchison can get some money out of) will be offered. This means that plenty of useful applications won't make the cut - vastly lessening the value of signing up with 3 and getting one of these phones. Found via MobileTracker.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
