Even Senator "Destroy Their Computers" Hatch Is Concerned About RIAA Lawsuits
from the even-more-backlash dept
Again, I'm really not trying to fill Techdirt up with only RIAA backlash stories - it's just that there are so many of them. This one might be the most surprising, however. Back in June, Senator Orrin Hatch (also an amateur musician) made a ton of news for suggesting that anyone found with infringing music files on their computers should have the machines destroyed. Like a good politician, though, he seems to have sensed that didn't go over so well in the court of public opinion. He's suddenly very very concerned that the DMCA is not perfect and that the RIAA may be overstepping their bounds by filing these lawsuits. Three months ago he wanted to simply fry all computers after a simple warning, and now he thinks a lawsuit is going too far? While it's nice that he's knocking the RIAA a bit, you have to wonder about how well Senator Hatch understands the issues he's talking about if he sways so widely from one side to the other in such a short period of time, without the simplest explanation for his change of heart.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

That's his JOB, and, while it may not be predictable, it at least is explainable.

If by "loudest" you mean those with the most $$s, then I agree.
Beyond that, voters are consumers who can be managed...
