Verizon Wireless' Strigl Reveals Data Success

You know it's good news when wireless carriers' CEOs are offering wireless data performance metrics. Up until early 2003, all they would ever say is "Those figures are confidential, but we're doing well." Yeah, sure. So well you need to keep it a secret! Times have changed, and in the US, VZW is the carrier with the most to boast. CEO Denny Strigl addressed a group of analysts at a Morgan Stanley Conference, and gave updated statistics covered in the article by Wireless Review. Data use is growing, with Q2 "Get It Now" downloads up 42% over Q1. Mobile gaming is 50% of the downloads, with RingTones at 38%, and 12% attributed to info services or productivity application. Verizon is also aggressively pursuing the enterprise market (with PTT, and 1xRTT data, and a re-orged sales force), and Strigl says the effort is paying off with "70% of the Fortune 100 and 50% of the Fortune 500 as corporate customers". Strigl was unclear whether the future dat roadmap would include national roll-out of EV-DO service, but did say the pilot projects have been successful. Is that genuine or faint praise?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
