More On VeriSign's Typosquatting Plans
from the moving-forward dept
A couple weeks ago we wrote about a Wall Street Journal story, saying that VeriSign was considering hijacking domain name typos and taking them to its own page. I thought that this was amusing coming just days after John Zuccarini was arrested for typosquatting. Now, newspapers that don't require a subscription have finally picked up on what is potentially a big story. The Washington Post has a rundown of VeriSign's plans to bring traffic to their own site any time someone makes a typo - suggesting they may want to sign a deal with a Google or LookSmart to monetize that traffic with advertisements. While the Post article says they're still debating what they're going to do, the NY Times reports that this new typosquatting/typojacking service will begin today.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Mike, you keep making these stupid grammar scr
Thanks for the note. As I always say, I appreciate people pointing out typos, and I try to correct them immediately.
What's unnecessary is specifically mean comments like "you need some kind of english refresher course."
You've never made a mistake?
Anyway, thank you for pointing out the typo. No thanks for being obnoxious about it at the same time.
