Amazon To Sell World's Largest Book - Literally

from the that's-a-big-book dept

theodp writes "So tell me again, which one is the fake story? 1) Amazon.com Shoplifter Caught - Amazon.com has decided to remove the "Shoplift Items in your Cart" option from their purchasing system. 2) Amazon To Sell World's Largest Book - Amazon.com plans to sell a massive 100 page book printed on seven foot by five foot pages book for $10,000 per copy." While I'm still posting this because it is amusing, I'd suggest that notoriously anti-Amazon theodp take some time to figure out what a "promotion" is. This was not done with the idea that anyone actually wanted such a large book, but to bring awareness and raise money for a fund-raiser. Personally, I think it's a pretty amusing way to get attention for a non-profit organization.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Amazon bashing

Being netoriously anti-Amazon myself... (though a recent convert to the world of anti-Amazon, they have seriously gone down hill customer support-wise since they became profitable,) I find it amuzing that Amazon is selling a book that single-handedly destroyed the Amazon rain forests, if a large number of the books are actually produced.

Think of all the trees that have to be felled to create a 100 page book, at 7 ft high and 5 ft wide.

Of course, who needs the Amazon, when we've got Amazon.

    Got Math?

I assume you were joking when you wrote this.

Assuming an average paperback size of about 6x10 (some larger, some smaller), these large pages equal about 60 pages of a "normal" size book. Assume the average paperback has 200 pages, and you get the answer that this book uses the same amount of paper as 30 average paperback books.

    > destroyed the Amazon rain forests

More humor? "I invented the Internet" Al Gore's books killed more trees that this thing will (never mind that International Paper isn't hauling trees up from Brazil).

You assumed right. I was joking (just waiting for the "5 Funny" score.) Besides, no self respecting book paper manufacturer (or any paper manufacturer) uses Amazon trees for paper production (as it is too expensive, the trees aren't decent enough in most cases to make paper, and they'd have just about every lobbying group, as well as a bunch of environmentalists at their throats.) Pine makes much better paper, and the trees used are usually "farm grown." And the Amazon's problem is rampant farming and cattleherding, not paper production.

Of course, I forgot the joke tags...but two-thirds of what I write here is a joke of one type or another, the rest is serious. Your task is to figure out which is which.
