Online Health Information Could Be Hazardous To Your Health

from the well,-duh dept

Just in case you forgot, here are a few more reasons why you shouldn't trust health information you find online. A study in Australia found that most online health information resources failed to meet basic standards, gave out misleading information, and were potentially hazardous to your health. Many of the sites, of course, were commercially driven, but don't often make that clear. Meanwhile, in the US, those of you who surf the net to learn about "herbal supplements" are also being misled by online information. Many sites talking about herbal remedies make unproven claims and leave out potential information about dangers associated with the products. I imagine they also leave out the fact that many of the pills may be contaminated with all sorts of crap (literally) that probably isn't on the ingredient label.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Drug Education

I am an avid internet user prior to taking ANY medication prescribed to me. By visiting both the commercial sites ( promoting the medicine ) as well as other sites ( many of which have user comments posted ) I am a MUCH better informed consumer before using a medicine. I am better aware of potential problems, side occurrences & drug interactions that could occur. Overall, I think that medical sites are an excellent way to educate yourself.
