Scammer Spams FBI
from the not-so-smart dept
One of the popular scams these days is the "phishing" scam, where the scammer spams everyone they can and tries to convince them that there was a problem with their "account" or credit card at a bank or ISP or something similar. They then try to guide them to a fake (but real looking) form to input their financial info, which then goes straight to the scammer. This scam has been getting more popular, since there are quite a few people gullible enough to fall for it. However, the danger of running a scam that involves spamming many people is you might spam the wrong guy. A woman accused of running just such a scam was caught because one of those spams went to an FBI agent specializing in computer fraud.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Phishing Scam / FBI
Any chance of arresting some of the people doing this scam -today-? From the Ukraine or Nigeria?
Hope rises eternal, but I'm not seeing much to base my hopes on.

Just Rewards
I have no sympathy for people stupid enough to fall for these scams. They are also the ones that buy penis enlargement pills, believe eating McDonald's food is healthy & suddenly became patriotic on September 12th.
Scammers scam because the general population is stupid & obviously falls for it.
